Weaver victorious; Davis takes checkered at Fremont FREMONT, Ohio (July 10) - Mark Keegan was cruising toward his 57th career feature win at Fremont Saturday, but someone forgot to tell David Harrison. Keegan slipped off the top of turn four with two laps remaining, allowing Harrison to duck under for the lead and the win. "I didn't think I had a chance...Mark has so many laps around Fremont and he was so good in lapped traffic," said Harrison beside his Ludwig Motorsports #10 carrying Crown Battery and Fremont Federal Credit Union sponsorship. "I had to keep my composure those last two laps because I knew Mark would fight back." And fight back he did, showing Harrison the nose of his #X car as they entered turn three on the final lap. Harrison cruised around the top to score the win. At the drop of the green for the 30-lap Schiets Motors Honda-Yamaha feature, Harrison jumped into the lead with Keegan in tow. They set a blistering pass, lapping cars by the fourth lap. Keegan snuck around Harrison on the ninth go-round. The first caution flew on lap 10 for a John Ivy 360 spin. The man on the move was Bobby Clark who was up to third on lap 12 from his fifth starting spot. The caution bunched up the field on lap 15 for Andy James who hit the soft walls in turn two. That proved to help Keegan who was mired in lapped traffic, allowing Harrison to close. Keegan set sail on the restart and looked to have the feature in hand, picking his way through lapped traffic with the precision of a surgeon, setting up the late-race drama. Harrison ducked under Keegan who slid off the top of turn four with two laps to go and held on for his second feature win of the season at "The Track That Action Built." Keegan finished second with eighth starting Mike Linder third. Fremont's Paul Weaver drove his Diet Pepsi, Strawberry Hill Convenience Store #1w into the lead with a bonsai move through turns three and four on lap 15 and went on to score his second 305 sprint feature win of the season. "I saw Mark Keegan and David Harrison up top and figured it was the fast way around....I don't think I got as high as them...I was leary of driving off the top," said Weaver. "I knew that 20x car (Brian Smith) would be coming again. I had my wife telling me I had a big lead on the back stretch and another person telling me to stand on it...I didn't know who to believe so I just drove it as hard as I could." At the drop of the green for the 25-lap Schiets Motors A-Main, Bellevue's Keith Whaley jumped into the lead. He held the lead until lap 8 when Willie Keegan went around him to take the top spot. Keegan maintained the lead until Weaver executed his winning pass on lap 15. At the checkered it was Weaver (who scored his seventh career Fremont victory), Smith, up from 11th, and Willie Keegan. However, a post-race inspection showed Keegan's car to have an illegal motor, and he was disqualified. The Coors Light Dirt Truck feature came down to the last three feet, with Bobby Davis edging Steve Sabo by a bumper for the victory. "Wow, that was exciting," said Davis of his last turn charge to the front. "We had some motor problems...it was stumbling a bit, but hey, we're in victory lane." Fremont's all-time career feature win leader Art Ball jumped into the lead at the drop of the green for the 15-lap Schiets Motors feature. Ball lead until two-time track champion Steve Sabo ducked under him on lap 16 to take the lead. Sabo got pinned behind lapped traffic, allowing Davis, who started fifth, to close. As the two came down the front stretch for the checkered, Sabo went low under the lapped truck of Buffy Bordner, and Davis went high to score the win. Sabo finished second, with Ball coming home third. Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, July 17 for Valleyview Health Care Center Night with the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and Coors Light Dirt Trucks in action.
