Wilson scores emotional All
Star win at Fremont
Haulmark All Star Sprint Results - Fremont Speedway Sat. 5/7/05
By Scott Hall
FREMONT, OH - Greg Wilson bided his time and found the inside groove
late in the race to pass Bobby Clark Saturday night at Fremont Speedway to
win his first Haulmark All Star sprint car 40 lap A main feature of the
season. Wilson's win came in the familiar Bob Hampshire No. 63 Maxim aboard
American Racer Tires.
"This is unbelievable," Wilson exclaimed from victory lane. "I've always
wanted to win an All Star race at Fremont, we've been close before. Hamp had
that thing like a rocket ship at the end. This is just unreal. That
Hampshire engine gotter' done tonight."
Clark and Lee Jacobs brought the field to the green flag, with Clark
jumping out into the lead over Jacobs and Rob Chaney. Clark pushed out to a
nice lead before Danny Smith brought out the yellow when he stopped at the
turn two pit entrance. Clark again led over Jacobs and Chaney, with Dean
Jacobs pressuring Chaney for third. Wilson, who started third, was back in
fifth and also began pressuring Jacobs.
Wilson made a high groove pass off turn four to get fourth on lap 11, and
began applying pressure on Chaney. Clark, meanwhile, held a big lead over
Jacobs.
Wilson stayed right on the bumper of Chaney, and they were side by side
on laps 18 and 19 before Wilson got by at the half way mark of the race.
Back in the pack, a nice battle was underway between Jeremy Campbell, Kenny
Jacobs and Dale Blaney for seventh.
As Clark entered lapped traffic on lap 21, Wilson disposed of L. Jacobs
and began reeling in the leader. Wilson closed to five car lengths before
another caution flew. Following the restart, Wilson pulled to within three
car lengths of the leader and it was a two car race as the leaders raced
ahead of L. Jacobs, Kemenah, Craig Mintz and Chaney. Wilson began making up
ground on the bottom groove, and finally made the winning pass with a low
move off turn four to lead lap 30.
From then on, Wilson raced to an easy win over Clark and L. Jacobs, who
had a consistent third place run. Kemenah finished fourth after starting
eighth. Smith made a great run through the pack after starting last after
the lap six caution to finish fifth. Mintz was next, with 17th starter Brock
Mayes the Fisher Performance Hard Charger of the race in seventh. Chaney
faded to eighth ahead of Kenny Jacobs and Dale Blaney, making his first
appearance in the Jack Elden No. 22.
"I think my tire sealed over," Clark said after finishing second. "We were
definitely better at the start of the race. I tried to make changes to the
car, but nothing helped."
The Crown Battery heat fell to Dale Blaney, the B&B Products heat went to
Mike Linder, the Engler Machine and Tool heat was won by John Ivy and the TP
Wings heat fell to Lee Jacobs. Kenny Jacobs won the University of
Northwestern Ohio B Main and Greg Wilson captured the Haulmark Dash. Dean
Jacobs was the Huggins Cams Fast Time qualifier. Chad Kemenah rode over the
infield berm and flipped in his heat. He was okay.
Paul Weaver won the non-stop 305 sprint main over Bryan Scott and
Bill Kraylek.
