Mike Linder makes it a clean
weekend sweep taking checkered at Fremont
Rookie Coty Runion wins 305
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (June 18, 2005) - After finishing second five times in 2004,
Mike Linder has shed his bridesmaid outfit. The Fremont driver picked up his
second 410 sprint feature win of the weekend Saturday, backing up Friday night's
victory at Attica Raceway Park with a win on Baumann Auto Group Night at Fremont
Speedway.
"I used to sell fuel at Attica and watch guys like Mark Keegan and Frankie Kerr
win. I'd think 'there's no way I could ever do that.' This is just a dream come
true to win 410 sprint races, especially at Fremont," said Linder, who claimed
his second victory of the year at "The Track That Action Built."
Elmore's Alvin Roepke jumped into the lead of the 410 sprint feature from his
pole starting spot, only to see David Harrison charge around the high side for
the point on lap two.Roepke, using the low groove, shot around Harrison for the
lead on lap 6. Roepke continued to lead while Linder moved into second from his
fifth starting spot on lap 12.Linder used lapped traffic to shoot around Roepke
for the lead on lap 13, with the caution flying the next lap. With 16 laps to go
the running order was Linder, Roepke, Mark Keegan and Lee Jacobs.
Linder bolted back into the lead on the restart, with Keegan getting around
Roepke for second. As the leaders hit lapped traffic with seven laps to go,
Keegan closed on Linder. Keegan slipped off the high side of turns three and
four, losing two spots, allowing Linder to cruise to the win.
"I have to thank my car owner Andy James and all our sponsors, Engler Printing,
Linder Speed Equipment, Vision Quest, Beaverdam Contracting....and tonight's
race sponsor the Baumann Auto Group for putting an extra $200 up to win," said
Linder, the current point leader at Fremont. "These other racers better pay
attention...these J&J chassis are flying."
Behind Linder at the checkered were Jacobs, Keegan, John Ivy, Harrison, Roepke,
Brian Smith, Brandon Martin, Byron Reed and Todd Heller.
Tiffin's Coty Runion, a 16-year-old rookie, scored his first career win, leading
all 25 laps of the 305 sprint feature.
Former go-karter Coty Runion looked like a seasoned veteran on his way to
victory lane. He benefitted from yellow flags when he was about to get into
lapped traffic, and showed patience and maturity with a couple laps to go on a
restart to hold off Andy Shammo for the win.
"I can't believe we did this already....I dreamed of this my whole life," said
Runion. "I have to thank my mom and dad and everyone who helps on this."
Behind Runion at the stand were Shammo, Bobby Foster, Bill Kraylek (up from
17th), Paul Weaver, Bryan Scott, Barry Cole, Chris Andrews, Brad Bowman, and
Ryan Lowe.
In the Coors Light Dirt Trucks, Fremont's Bobby Davis scored his first win of
the season, but it wasn't easy, as defending track champion Steve Sabo hounded
him the entire way, running right on his rear bumper.
"Stevie taught me how the run the bottom here. I knew if I didn't slip up off
the bottom or get on the berm I'd be alright," said Davis beside his Crown
Battery, Smith Automotive sponsored truck.
Behind Davis and Sabo were Ron Kepling, Ralph Willey, Jim Welty, Dwight
Waltermeier, Bob Dible, Paul Dymond, Jim McGrath and Eric DeVanna.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, June 25 for the Mid-Seasn
Championship sponsored by Burger King and Snyder's Floor Covering, who are
helping kick in an extra $4,500 to the purse. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. with
racing at 7:30 p.m.
