A night of firsts at Fremont
Speedway for Mike Linder and Brad Bowman; Arnold takes truck main
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (Saturday, June 4, 2005) - It was a night of first at Fremont
Speedway Saturday, as Mike Linder (410 sprints) and Brad Bowman (305 sprints)
scored their first ever feature wins in their divisions on Crown Battery Night.
Linder, from Fremont, grew up watching his dad, Jim Linder become a legend at
"The Track That Action Built," winning 58 features (tied for third on the
all-time win list) and seven track championships. It was finally his turn to
stand on the front stretch at the end of a feature event.
"Boy this is my dream...to be standing on the front stretch at Fremont Speedway.
This is home," declared Linder beside his Andy James Motorsports/Beaverdam
Contracting #3.
For Shelby's Brad Bowman the excitement of winning a feature at the tough
third-mile dirt track was almost overwhelming.
"I've been racing four years and this is the first feature I've ever won," said
Bowman beside his Cleveland Golf #55. "I have to thank Scott Mominee for giving
me parts to repair my car after I hit the wall last week. I want to thank my dad
and mom and the entire crew who work so hard...I can't believe I finally made it
to the front stretch here. It's a dream come true."
In the Coors Light Dirt Trucks, Brian Arnold scored his second win of the season
aboard the Distel Vinyl Graphics/Crown Battery #33.
"We just couldn't win one here last year...we had a lot of seconds and thirds,
but we just couldn't put it in victory lane. Things are just falling right this
year so far. I have to thank my crew for all the hard work they put into this
every week," said Arnold of Tiffin.
At the drop of the green for the 30-lap 410 sprint mean, pole sitter Greg Wilson
jumped into the lead with Lee Jacobs and Linder in tow. Linder disposed of
Jacobs on the second lap and set his sights on Wilson. Linder, using the extreme
high side of the track, squeezed by Wilson exiting turn two on the sixth lap and
built a sizeable lead until getting into lapped traffic. Linder had a difficult
time putting the David Harrison sprinter down a lap, leaving the door open for
WIlson to close.
Linder got a break on lap 24, as Andrew Palker slide off of turn three bringing
out the first caution and giving Linder a clean track ahead.
On the restart, Byron Reed, who started sixth, used the bottom grove to get
around Wilson and close on Linder. The caution flew again for a spinning Palker
on lap 26, setting up a classic two-car dual between Linder and 2003 Fremont
champion Reed. On the restart Linder set sail around the top ring, while Reed
used the bottom to pull beside Linder and hold a brief lead down the back
stretch. Linder shot around the top of three and four to regain the lead and go
on to score the vistory.
"We need to take down that scoreboard...I kept looking up on the cautions and
you see that 63 car (Wilson) who has won everything here, and the 5 car (Reed)
and you start worrying," joked Linder. "I knew if I kept it around the top I'd
be alright, but I about gave it away there the last couple of laps. I almost got
over the bank in two. It's a fine line between winning and disaster when you run
up there."
Reed finished second, with Wilson third, 20th starting Alvin Roepke fourth and
Bobby Clark rounding out the top five.
Bowman led all 25 of the non-stop feature laps in the 305 main to score the win
over Andy Shammo, Bryan Scott, Roger Shammo and Paul Weaver.
"I got worried when I got into lapped traffic...they were running three wide in
front of me. I just had to be patient and not worry about who might be coming,"
said Bowman.
In the truck feature, Fostoria's Bob Dible took the early lead with Andy Maynard
and Arnold in tow. The man on the move was Art Howey Jr., as he moved into the
lead on lap eight. However, Howey suffered a flat tire and had to retire to the
pits. Dible also went to the pits with mechanical troubles, handing the lead to
Arnold, who survived several caution flags for the win. Bobby Davis came from
10th to finish second, with Steve Sabo third, Art Ball fourth and Maynard
rounding out the top five.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, June 11, on Wendy's
Old-Fashion Hamburgers NIght featuring the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and Coors
Light Dirt Trucks. Log onto www.fremontohspeedway.com for more information.
