ATTICA, Ohio (Friday, April 28, 2006) - A front row starting spot was
not where you wanted to be on Bazell Race Fuels Night at Attica Raceway
park Friday.
Bucyrus, Ohio's Brock Mayes started ninth in the 410 sprint feature
and went on to claim an exciting victory - his first career win.
Pinconning, Michigan's Jeep VanWormer started fifth and went on to
capture his first career Attica victory in the Sunoco American Late
Model Series. Sandusky's Chris Andrews started eighth and ended up in
victory lane for the second time in his young career at Attica in the
305 sprints.
Also, Findlay's Chad Kemenah dominated the remaining 17 laps of the
make-up 410 feature that was rained out on April 21, to score his 19th
career ARP victory. The UUI crew then loaded up and headed for
Saturday's World of Outlaws show in Knoxville, Iowa.
In the regular 410 feature, defending track champion Byron Reed
jumped into the early lead from his pole starting position with Brandon
Martin, Mark Keegan and Craig Mintz giving chase. The first caution
would fly on lap 6 for Chad Blonde, with the running order now Reed,
Keegan, Martin, Mintz, 10th starting Phil Gressman, Mike Linder, Brian
Smith and Mayes.
Reed would continue to show the way with Keegan and Linder waging a
great battle for second. By lap 20, Reed held the advantage over a
closing Linder, Keegan and now Mayes. Disaster nearly struck Reed on lap
22 when he went off the high side of turn two. He gathered it back in,
as the yellow would fly for a Niel Shepard spin. Reed had a lapped
machine between he and Linder on the restart, with Keegand Mayes in tow.
On the restart, Mayes used the bottom to move around Keegan exiting turn
two, and then Linder in turn four to take second.
Reed got bottled up in traffic, allowing Mayes to close. Mayes
rocketed off the bottom of turn four to take the lead as they received
the white flag. Reed would drive to Mayes' outside through turns three
and four on the final lap, but Mayes would out drag him to the
checkered.
"We have worked so hard over the past four years for this...I was
beginning to think it would never come," said Mayes beside his J&F
Construction, Kinn Brothers Heating and Cooling sponsored #11B. "My crew
keeps working hard and they gave me a heck of a car....it was easy to
drive. I thought we guessed wrong at the start...I went to the bottom
and it just kept getting better and better."
In the make-up 410 feature, no one came close to touching Kemenah. He
had taken the lead on April 21 with a great move off the bottom of turn
4 on lap 13, only to see the rains fall, putting the victory on hold
until April 28.
"I have to thank John Bores for all the help he's given us over the
years. I want to thank Paul Kistler for the great motors and my family
and crew for all their support," said Kemenah beside his Underground
Utilities Inc. sponsored #15K. "I really have to give credit to my
brother Brian and all the guys on the crew. They have been working
really hard...I've torn up some cars the past couple of months and they
have rolled up their sleeves and didn't give up."
In the ALMS feature, Steve Casebolt jumped into the lead from his
pole starting spot and looked to have the race in hand. The fans were
watching a great battle for second between Aaron Scott, Brady Smith and
VanWormer. But, as Casebolt became mired in lapped traffic, VanWormer,
who had disposed of Scott and Smith, closed. As the five-to-go signal
was given, VanWormer drove under Casebolt for the lead. Casebolt would
not give up though, pulling along side VanWormer as they entered turns
three and four for the final time. VanWormer would get the bite off the
bottom and score the victory.
"We started the night with a good pill draw which is important when
you have this many talented racers here. We were fast in our heat and I
knew by feature time if I was patient and took my time, we'd be
alright," said VanWormer beside his Glob Technologies, Mastersbuilt
sponsored #55.
In the 305 sprint main, pole sitter Andy Shammo jumped into the early
lead. Scott Kraylek would take the lead five laps into the feature as he
and Shammo would touch wheels briefly. Jeremy Durst would wrestle second
from Shammo four laps later, with a fast closing Andrews in fourth.
Shammo's mount would suffer a broken front three laps later.
On the restart, Kraylek would continue to lead, with Durst, Andrews
and Paul Weaver slicing back and forth. With 10 laps remaining, Andrews
would power around Kraylek on the bottom and go on to the win.
"This is really cool. We've been getting better and better every
week," said Andrews beside his Spill Tek, Blue-Chip Machine sponsored
#15c. "I have to thank my parents and all my sponsors for allowing me to
do this.
Attica Raceway Park will be back in action Friday, May 5 for
Peps/Scout Night. All scouts - boys and girls - who wear their uniform
to the track get free admission. Besides the normal show of 410 sprints,
305 sprints and limited late models, the 305s will run a make-up feature
from the April 21 rainout.
