ATTICA, Ohio (Friday, May 5, 2006) - When Greg Wilson came to draw
the pill for his heat race starting spot Friday at Attica Raceway Park,
he displayed all the confidence of a racer expecting to walk away with
the night's feature victory.
A poor starting spot in the 30-lap A-main was of little consequence
to the Benton Ridge, Ohio driver. He roared through the pack from his
13th starting spot, and took the lead from Byron Reed with a great pass
off turn four with just four laps remaining and went on to the victory,
his second of the season at "Ohio's Finest Racing" venue on Pepsi/Scouts
Night.
"We have been very fast here. I knew I could get to the front if I
was patient. I knew on that last restart I was better than Byron in
three and four," said Wilson, who now has 13 career victories at Attica,
tying him for sixth on the all-time win list with Frankie Kerr. "Our
teammate won at Lima tonight, so this is a good night for our owner,
Veryl Warnimont and our
sponsors All Star Plumbing and Heating. My hat's off to the crew who
puts in all the hours in the shop all week."
It was a busy night for the 305 sprints as they had a make-up feature
from the rained out April 21 Underground Utilities Night in addition to
the full program on Pepsi Night. Paul Weaver charged into the lead on
lap 13 and went on to claim the make-up feature. Weaver and Chris
Andrews would pass and repass each other on the last lap of the regular
feature before Andrews would record his second win in as many weeks.
"We just kept the car on the bottom and tried to stay smooth,"
exclaimed Weaver in victory lane for the third time this season at
Attica.
Weaver thanked his sponsors, M&L Excavating, Level Performance and
Weaver Konce Construction. He now has 17 career ARP victories, putting
him in fourth on the all-time win list.
For Andrews, the 2006 season has been all about confidence.
"We came into the year with a change in attitude. We had new
equipment and a new confidence," Andrews said beside his Goofy Golf,
Adkins Sanitation sponsored #15c. "I love racing Paul Weaver...he's very
tough, but you know he'll race you clean. I hate that I made contact
with him coming down for the checkered, but it was for the win! When
Paul went around me after we took the white flag, I knew if I didn't
over react, I would get another shot at him in three and four."
Larry Kingseed was able to take advantage of Mike Marteney's
misfortune to claim his third win of the season in the limited late
model feature. It was Kingseed's 19th career ARP win, putting him in
fifth on the all-time win list.
"I was bidding my time with Mike...he was fast and I knew I had my
work cut out for me. Then I saw he broke something on the front
suspension and I knew I had the win wrapped up. We are on a roll now and
I'm going to do my best to keep it going," said Kingseed beside his John
M. Allen Co., A&S Graphics sponsored stock car.
In the 410 feature, Todd Heller jumped into the early lead only to
see margins disappear with a yellow on lap six. Wilson had worked his
way up to 7th. Reed dove under Heller to take the lead a lap after the
green flew. The caution would fly on lap 12 with the running order Reed,
David Harrison, Brandon Martin, Heller, Wilson and last week's winner
Brock Mayes, up from his 17th starting spot.
The yellow would again fly at the halfway mark with Reed now leading
over Martin, Harrison, whose front wing was smashed onto the car's hood,
Wilson, Heller, Mayes, Phil Gressman and Bryan Scott. Wilson would
dispose of Harrison a lap lader to move into third, bringing Mayes into
the fourth. On lap 23, Wilson moved into second and began pressuring
Reed.
The race would grind to a halt on lap 25 when Scott took a nasty flip
off of turn two. He was taken to the hospital for a check-up, but exited
his damaged car under his own power. On the restart, Wilson would make
his winning move exiting turn four.
"I'm ready for the World of Outlaws...I'm excited and a bit nervous,"
exclaimed Wilson about the national touring group's visit to ARP on
Friday, May 12.
It looked like Weaver would make it a clean-sweep at ARP. After
winning the make-up feature in convincing fashion, he started on the
pole of the regular A-main. But, at the drop of the green, it was Brad
Bowman who took the top spot from the outside row, with Andrews getting
around Weaver for second. However, Bowman would slide off the high side
of turn three on lap 13, handing the lead to Andrews. By lap 23, Weaver
was on Andrews' tail as they hit lapped traffic. Enter Bryan Sebetto who
moved in on the two top runners in traffic to challenge. with two laps
to go, Andrews, Weaver and Sebetto were nearly three wide for the lead.
As the leaders took the white flag, Weaver used a lapped machine as a
pick and executed a slide job on Andrews in turns one and two for the
lead. But, Andrews raced to his inside exiting turn two and they were
neck and neck down the backstretch. This time it was Andrews who
executed the slide job in three and four and after a slight bump with
Weaver, went on to the win.
After Marteney dropped out on lap 16 with mechanical woes, Kingseed
held off a late race challenge from Mike Bores to claim the limited late
model feature win.
