Jack-O-Lantern Twin 35's
Mintz, Shaver Prevail over Pumpkinfest
Skyline Speedway Results 10-11-08 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
By Scott Wolfe
STEWART, OHIO-With 141 cars in the pits and a good October crowd, Billy
Jarrell's Skyline Speedway was doing its own version of "Monster Rock" in the
first running of the dual Jack-o-Lantern 35's. Northern Ohio invader Craig
Mintz, Gibsonburg, Ohio claimed the crown in the 410 Sprint main, while the
companion Late Model main was won by Vienna, WV driver Steve Shaver. Mike Martin
claimed the Street Stock main, Jeremy Blake won the Pure Stocks, Ryan McClain
claimed the Four Cylinders, Tracy Fritter the Mod Lites, and Ronnie Pickens took
the Mini Wedge main.
The 410 sprinters took to the speedway first led by dash winner Craig Mintz and
All-Star Champ Dale Blaney. Mintz led the first five markers as Blaney mapped
out his strategy, diving low past Mintz as the two exchanged positions-and-back
on the cross-over. Mintz continued to lead as a lapped car sawed off Blaney and
gave the Northern Ohio driver some breathing room.
Mintz took the low road to freedom and garnered some momentum. Meanwhile, Danny
Smith began to run down the front runners as a smooth-driving Mintz drove
through traffic on cruise control. In-and-out, high and low Mintz's every move
was smooth and sneaky-fast.
A lot of close action followed the leaders, but all eyes were on Mintz and his
breath-taking moves through traffic. Blaney was no less impressive and by lap 23
was back to within a couple car lengths. Mintz felt Blaney's presence and
responded with a sense of urgency. As if shifting into overdrive, Mintz once
again opened up the lead to five or more rods, just as the caution waved for a
spinning Caleb Griffith on lap 25.
Drivers tightened up their belts, and fans moved closer to the edge of their
seats in anticipation for a classic Skyline finish. Cole Duncan,
Kevin Lee, and Aaron Higgins all had great runs
in a fight for the top five. Mintz went low and Blaney high with two different
strategies as Cole Duncan and Aaron Higgins both bagged Smith for third and
fourth. Smith responded with a vengeance and battled to regain position.
The first time Mintz visited Skyline Speedway, he liked it. In his last visit
Saturday, he absolutely loved it. Mintz rode his rocketship, a Griff's Mopar/Maxim
Chassis, into the Skyline record books as Blaney struggled to find any part of
turf where his car could make traction. Duncan moved in on Blaney to add to the
excitement as Mintz blasted under the checkered for his first Skyline win, while
Danny Smith bagged Higgins for fourth at the start-finish line.
"I've been here three times and I absolutely love this place. You guys (Skyline)
put on a great show and this is a great track," exclaimed Mintz. "It was an
honor to be able to start beside Dale Blaney. He's one of the best. We've raced
Dale close on occasion, but to get the jump and eventually beat him was a
bonus."
Kevin Lee made his first visit to Skyline a
good one, showcasing his talents in the Southern half of the state in placing
just ahead of Josh Davis, Jimmy Nier, Keith Baxter, and Cale Conley who rounded
out the top ten. Mintz lapped all but the first nine cars.
