Ivy holds on for 5th win; Brock Mayes scores third victory; Matt Lucius wins career first

By Brian Liskai

FREMONT, Ohio (July 13, 2002) - Fremont's John Ivy held on for his fifth 410
sprint feature win of the 2002 season at Fremont Speedway Saturday during
Burkin Custom Trailers Night. Bucyrus' Brock Mayes scored his third win of
the season in the 305 sprints, and Matt Lucius of Tiffin picked up his first
career feature win in the dirt truck feature.

Ivy started on the outside of the front row, but it was Castalia's Troy
Vaccaro who led the first lap. Ivy took the lead out of turn four on the
second lap and seemed to have things well in hand. But, about half way
through the 30 lap main, Elmore's Alvin Roepke used his patented low groove
to move around Butch Schroeder into second and set his sights on Ivy. Roepke
stuck the nose of his Mountain Dew #99 under Ivy a couple of times, until
Ivy moved down to the low grove to block.

A yellow with two laps remaining bunched up the field, but it put the lapped
car of John Wisbon between Ivy and Roepke. Ivy then cruised the final two
laps for the victory over fast qualifier Byron Reed, Schroeder, Roepke and
Helena's Phil Gressman.

"I saw Alvin's nose a couple of times and I figured I had better get out of
the high groove or he was going to get me," said Ivy standing beside his
Carousel Racing #20. "What a great year we're having. I have to thank all my
crew. They work hard on this thing all week and it pays off on Saturday."

In the 305 sprint feature, Mayes used the low groove to get around early
leader Jamie Miller and then raced away to the win. It was the second win in
as many nights for Mayes who also won the 305 sprint feature Friday at
Attica Raceway Park. Castalia's Bryan Scott scored his second runner-up
finish of the weekend, with Miller settling for third, Gibsonburg's Craig
Mintz finishing fourth, and Green Springs' Josh Hill rounding out the top
five.

In the dirt truck feature, Matt Lucius jumped into the early lead, but
defending track champion Steve Sabo got around him with seven laps
remaining. However, Sabo ran over the burm in turn two and nearly spun his
truck out, giving the lead back to Lucius. Lucius then held off a hard
charging Jeff Dougherty of Fremont and Woodville's Danny Roepke for his
first career feature win. Sabo came back to take fourth, with Findlay's Jay
Boyd rounding out the top five.

"The Track That Action Built" will be back in action Saturday, July 20 for
Crown Battery Night with the 410 springs, 305 sprints and dirt trucks.
