Lee Jacobs
Dominates
At Fremont
Speedway
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (May 10, 2003) - What a great phone call Lee
Jacobs got to
make on the front stretch of Fremont Speedway Saturday. He got to call his
dad, four-time All Star Champion Kenny Jacobs and deliver the good news that
he had just won his first career 410 sprint feature on Roots Poultry Night.
"Wow, this is fantastic. My dad raced here a lot of years
before he got his
first win (30 years). I'll remind him mine came a lot quicker," said Jacobs,
a third generation driver from Holmesville, Ohio. "Aaron Hammer had this car
set up perfectly...anyone could have driven it to victory. I have to thank S
and S Builders and Excavators out of Fremont...they came aboard as our main
sponsor this year and it's great to get them a win in front of their
hometown crowd."
Jacobs took the lead from pole-sitter Troy Vacarro on lap 7
and dominated
the 30-lap feature, lapping up to seventh place at the checkered. John Ivy
came from the middle of the pack to finish second, with Vacarro third, Byron
Reed (up from 12th) taking fourth and Brock Mayes rounding out the top five.
In the 305 sprint feature, Jamie Miller looked like he
would cruise to the
win, but he tangled with a lapped car, and Millberry's Andy Shammo was there
to take advantage for the win. It was Shammo's second win of the season at
Fremont and his third feature win of the 2003 season (he scored a win at
Attica Raceway Park).
Behind Shammo was Castalia's Caleb Griffith, who was right
on Shammo's
bumper at the checkered. Daniel Smith of Fremont made a big charge from 18th
to finish third with Scott Miller fourth and Brian Sebetto rounding out the
top five.
The dirt truck feature was exciting, as Greg Summitt and
Danny Roepke raced
side by side to the checkered, swapping paint with a lapped car in the mix.
Roepke edged out Summitt for the win, with Brian Arnold, Steve Rando and
L.J. Connors rounding out the top five. Roepke dedicated the win to his late
uncle, Jim "Smiley" Roepke, the 1956 Modified Track Champion at Fremont, who
passed away earlier in the week.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, May 17
with Fremont Fence
Night featuring the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and dirt trucks.
