Danny Smith, Jeff Shephard Score Wins At Fremont's Budweiser Shoot-Out

By Brian Liskai

FREMONT, Ohio (May 24, 2003) - The fans got their money's worth at Fremont Speedway Saturday for the Budweiser Shoot-Out with two features for the 410 sprints.

Danny Smith led all 25 laps in the opening Bud Light feature, claiming $2,500.

"Starting up front helps. The second feature will be hard...there's a lot of good cars starting up front," said Smith, about the completely inverted start of the second Budweiser feature. "I think some of those guys were trying not to run up front so they could start up front in the second
feature. Hey, I'll take $2,500 bucks!"

Behind Smith were Chad Kemenah, Jeff Shephard, Rob Chaney and Craig Keel.

In the 30-lap finale, Fremont's Mike Linder looked like he would score his first career 410 sprint feature, taking the lead from Jim Dayton on lap 3. Last week's feature winner Jeff Shephard was patiently picking his way through the pack from his 18th starting spot and passed Linder with just four laps remaining to score the $3,000 victory.

"I did the math and figured I had to pass a car a lap. I got racing with some of the cars back there and got a little impatient. I moved the wing back and sat up in the car and started going forward," said Shephard.

"Bob and Heath Miller gave me a great car and Andy Potter sure knows how to hook'em up around here. They're going to make me like this old place yet," Shephard added.

Behind Shephard was Linder, Mark Keegan, rookie Brock Mayes and Byron Reed.

In the 305 sprint feature, Roger Shammo collected his second feature win of the season at Fremont. Behind Shammo were Dustin Keegan, Scott Miller, Matt Merrill and Ryan Lowe, up from 16th.
