Chaney, Miller,
Sabo, hold off Mother Nature at Fremont
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (May 14, 2005) - A feature win was just the medicine an ailing
Rob Chaney needed Saturday, as he took the checkered in the 410 sprint feature
on Crabill Construction Night at Fremont Speedway.
Despite rains throughout the morning and early afternoon, the Fremont
Speedway crew worked hard to get the track in race condition and the fans were
treated to an entertaining night of racing, as Scott Miller of Columbus took the
win in the 305 sprints, and Fremont's Steve Sabo scored his 22nd career victory
at "The Track That Action Built" by winning the Coors Light Dirt Truck main.
In the 410 feature, eight-time Fremont Speedway champion Mark Keegan jumped
into the early lead, with Fremont's Mike Linder in second, defending track
champion John Ivy thired and three-time All Star champion Chad Kemenah fourth.
Linder took the lead from Keegan on lap 7 and held the advantage until the first
caution flew on lap 9 for a stalled Brandon Martin.
On the restart, Andrew Palker and Jeff Banyas got together in turn one with
Palker doing a nasty flip. Both drivers were okay. After firing back off, second
running Keegan went pitside, moving Kemenah up to second, Ivy up to third,
fifth-starting Chaney up to fourth and Fremont Federal Credit Union fast
qualifier Brock Mayes to fifth.
Linder set sail on the bottom of the fast, tacky track, with the battle
heating up for second between Kemenah, Chaney and Ivy. Chaney shot around
Kemenah on the bottom of turn three on lap 19 to move into second, while Linder
continued to lead. Linder got into lapped traffic with 10 laps to go and
struggled to get around Ricky Ferkel who was running in Linder's bottom groove.
Linder had to move high to try and put Ferkel a lap down and that's when Chaney
made his move, using Ferkel's machine as a pick to move around Linder coming out
of turn four with eight laps remaining.
Chaney went on to the win with Linder second, Kemenah third, Ivy fourth and
Byron Reed rounding out the top five.
"I have to thank Jimmy and A.J. Havens for giving me such a great car and
Stan Courtad for providing all the equipment I needed to race and win," said
Chaney. "I'm a little tired...I haven't been feeling too well the past few days,
but this certainly helps. I also want to thank Jim Ford and his entire Fremont
Speedway crew...they worked their tails off so that we could race tonight while
every other track in Ohio was rained out."
"Mike (Linder) was really good in the open track...I knew if I could get to
him in lapped traffic I might have something for him," said Chaney of his
winning move. "The car would go any where I wanted it to...hopefully this will
put us on track to win a bunch more."
Scott Miller took the lead on lap three from Chris Andrews and had some great
restarts to pull away from the field to claim the 305 feature. Jamie Miller
would come home second with Andrews, Paul Weaver and A.J. Sleek rounding out the
top five.
"I have to thank the Deel family for putting this team together...this one is
for Jimmy Deel, he was a great person," said Miller beside his JD Automotive
sponsored 3J.
Sabo battled all-time feature win leader Art Ball early in the Coors Light
Dirt Truck main, and held on for his 22nd feature win at Fremont, moving him
into a tie for 16th on the all-time win list. Ball would come home second with
opening week feature winner Brian Arnold third, Jim Welty fourth and Dwight
Waltermier rounding out the top five.
"I want to dedicate this win to my dad who is at home sick...it's been a long
time since he missed a race and we miss him," said Sabo.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, May 21 for Roots Poultry
Night featuring the Sprints On Dirt 360 sprints taking on the Fremont Speedway
305 sprints in the second annual challenge. The 410 sprints are also on the
racing card.
