Tim Hunter tames Fremont
Clark edges Ivy for 410 win
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (May 21, 2005) - Tim Hunter has seen a lot of race tracks in
his short sprint car driving career, but he readily admits, Fremont Speedway is
one of the toughest.
The Millersburg, Ohio driver drove the Thad Stanley-owned 360 sprint to the
victory in the second SOD (Sprints On Dirt) verses 305 sprint challenge feature
Saturday during Roots Poultry Night at "The Track That Action Built."
"My brother gave me a great deal last year and we raced a lot of tracks - I ran
in 20 states, but Fremont is the toughest place to figure you in the country,"
said Hunter beside his Canfield Cylinder Heads sprinter.
Gibsonburg, Ohio's Roger Shammo in a 305 drove out to a good lead in the
feature, but Hunter, who started fith in the 25-lap main, found the high side
and used lapped traffic to get round Shammo to take the lead mid-way through the
main. Hunter gave the 360 drivers some revenge as he took the checkered over 305
driver Bryan Scott, Shammo, 360 driver Mike Brecht and 305 driver Paul Weaver.
"My four-month-old baby is here tonight...what a way to start your life...in
victory lane," said an elated Hunter on besting the 69-car combined Sod, 305
sprint car field.
The 410 sprint feature was a dandy, as Fremont's Bobby Clark edged defending
track champion John Ivy for the win.
Mike Linder, fresh off his Attica Raceway Park win, jumped into the early lead,
but Clark found the high grove to his liking and over-took Linder on lap 17.
Clark built a sizeable lead, only to watch it slip away in the closing laps as
Ivy closed in lapped traffic. As the duo took the white, Ivy dove under Clark in
turns three and four, but Clark kept up his momentum to take the win.
Fremont Federal Credit Union Fast Qualifier Todd Heller was on their bumper for
third, with Kevin Huntly and Linder following at the checkered.
"I saw a car (Ivy) come up beside me at the end and I knew it had to be someone
for the lead because no lapped cars were going that fast," said Clark beside his
KOT Trucking/Fremont Fence sponsored #8. "Andy (Potter) put this car together
this week...it's a brand new car and it's a lot of fun to drive.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, May 28, with the Budweiser
Shootout, featuring twin mains for the 410 sprints.
