Rob Chaney uses last lap
pass to win at Fremont
Daniel Smith records first victory
Dan Roepke holds on in wild dirt
truck main
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (June 11, 2005) - Rob Chaney went from third to victory lane in
the last half lap of the 410 sprint feature at Fremont Speedway Saturday night
leaving the large crowd all saying WOW! disbelieving what they had just
witnessed.
"We took the white and I got to Brandon (Martin) and I figured we'd settle for
second. Then we get into three and I see Mark (Keegan) take the middle with
lapped cars right ahead of him and it was just what I wanted," said the
Millersburg driver. "When you get into lapped traffic at Fremont it's usually
better to be in second place because the leader has to make the decision what
line to take and you can react to that."
"I have to thank Stan Courtad for sticking with me through thick and thin. I
also have to thank Scott Miller and A.J. Havens who bust their tails all week on
this thing," said Chaney.
It was eight-time Fremont Speedway champion Mark Keegan who bolted into the lead
from his outside front row starting spot at the drop of the green. Keegan led
the way when the first caution flew on lap 8 for an Alvin Roepke spin. On the
restart, Keegan started getting pressure from Brandon Martin, whose crew spent
all of Friday night assembling a new car after he crashed the night before. The
red flew on lap 19 for a Caleb Griffith tip over with the running order Keegan,
Martin, Chaney and Mike Linder, who came from 13th starting spot.
On the restart, Keegan again set sail around the top side of the tacky clay
oval. It looked like Keegan would pick up his 59th career win when they took the
white flag, but Martin and Chaney were closing as Keegan was forced race behind
lapped traffic who were racing side by side for position ahead of him. Chaney
passed Martin coming out of turn two and was on Keegan's bumper entering three
when Keegan had to slow ever so slightly for the lapped traffic, allowing Chaney
to diamond off the corner and pass him for the win.
Behind Chaney - who became the first two-time winner at "The Track That Action
Built" on Wendy's Old Fashion Hamburger Night - were Keegan, Martin, Linder,
Byron Reed, Leey Jacobs, John Ivy (up from 20th), Jason Dukes, Craig Mintz and
David Harrison.
Fremont's Daniel Smith won his first ever 305 sprint feature at Fremont Speedway
in a crash-filled event that had three red flags (for A.J. Sleek, Todd Heuerman
and Jamie Miller (his second flip of the night)) and a caution.
At the drop of the green, Andy Shammo jumped into the lead, with Roger Shammo on
his bumper and Bryan Scott in third. Scott disposed of Roger Shammo and was on
the rear bumper of Andy when the two touched exiting turn two on lap six,
sending both spinning and giving the lead to Smith. Smith, aboard the Mominee
Motorsports #72, held the top spot while all eyes were on Paul Weaver who moved
into third on lap nine and around Roger Shammo two laps later. But, Smith
maintained his middle-of-the-track groove and went on to the win.
"I can't believe this...I never thougth I'd ever get a win here...this is my
second victory...I won at Lakeville a couple of years ago, but this is my
hometown and to do this in front of my friends and family is just awesome," said
Smith. "I have to thank Scott and Jody Mominee for giving me the equipment to
race and to Rainbow Lanes and Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken and the Tackle Box for
their sponsorship."
Behind Smith at the finish were Weaver, Scott, who came back from the tail from
his early race spin, Roger Shammo, Kevin Lee, Bobby Foster, Ryan Lowe, Andy
Shammo, Dustin Dinan[ and Barry Cole.
It was a wild finish in the Coors Light Dirt Trucks, as Woodville's Dan Roepke
held off Paul Dyamond for his second win of the season. Behind Roepke and Dymond
were Art Howey Jr., J-Jim Welty, Ron Kepling, Dwight Waltermier, Andy Maynard,
Ralph Willey, Steve Sabo and Brain Sorg.
"That was hard work tonight...the track was really fast and I had my hands
full," said Roepke beside his Village Inn, Adler's Transmission truck.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, June 18 for Baumann Auto Group
Night with the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and Coors Light Dirt Trucks.
