Dean Jacobs grabs Fremont
All Star loot; Paul Weaver, Bob Dible pick up wins
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (Saturday, May 6, 2006) - Dean Jacobs used to be a young,
cowboy'm up, high side driver. But he has learned through his years of racing,
that some times you need to adapt your skills to suit the track conditions and
competition. That paid off for him Saturday, as he took advantage of early
leader Greg Wilson's troubles to score the All Star Circuit of Champions feature
at Fremont Speedway.
"I know I've been critical of this place in the past, but as I get older I
appreciate the history of Fremont and how difficult it is to win here," said
Jacobs beside his Ray Pullin's #29 on his first ever victory at "The Track That
Action Built." "To come back from Australia and win in only our second night out
with this team is awesome."
"I have to dedicate this to my dad...we lost him this winter and it's hard to
come to the track knowing he's not here. We also had a buddy lose a son in a car
wreck last week. We have both their names on the car," added Jacobs whose car
carries the Waverly Quik Lube sponsorship.
The 40-lap feature on Pepsi Night began with current All Star point leader
Greg Wilson jumping into the lead from his pole starting spot, with Jacobs,
Kelley Kinser and Caleb Griffith in tow. The first of only two cautions in the
feature flew on lap 5 for debris. On the restart, Wilson rocketed off the bottom
of the turns to take a commanding lead. By lap 11, he led over Jacobs, Kinser,
Chad Blonde, Griffith, Brock Mayes and Butch Schroeder who had started 17th.
The final caution would prove costly to Wilson. Jamie Miller spun in turn
three in front of Wilson who went off the high side of the track to avoid the
stopped machine, ending up spinning into the soft walls. Wilson was able to
continue, but back in 24th starting spot.
The running order was now Jacobs, Kinser, Blonde, Mayes, Danny Smith,
Griffith, Kevin Huntley up from 14th, Byron Reed and Schoeder. The leaders hit
lapped traffic on lap 28, allowing Kinser to close on Jacobs. Trying to get as
low on the track as possible, Jacobs flirted with the berm along the edge
several times during the final five laps, getting his left front off the ground
exiting turn two.
When Jacobs took the white, Kinser was right on his rear bumper. Jacobs, who
hails from Wooster, Ohio, was smooth the final four turns and went on to the win
over Kinser, Mayes, Blonde, Reed, Smith, Dale Blaney, Huntley, Griffith and Rob
Chaney.
"I tried to rattle Dean's cage a couple of times by showing him my nose, but
he did what a good racer is supposed to do...stay your line. We gave this Crone
Lumber car a good run and we'll take second," said Kinser from Bloomington, Ind.
"This is where a lot of us started...so to come here and be on the front
stretch at the end of the night is very special," said Mayes, who began his
career in the 305 sprints at Fremont. "We have a lot of confidence right now."
In the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 sprint feature, it looked like Bryan
Sebetto had the victory in hand. But defending Fremont track champion Paul
Weaver utilized the only clear path on the race track - the top rim - to rocket
around Sebetto with three laps remaining to pick up his first win of the season
at Fremont and his 14th career victory.
"I was committed to running the bottom...that looked like the place to be.
After running around down there a few laps I thought 'this is boring' so I moved
to the high side and the car just took off. The harder I ran it in the better it
got," said Weaver beside his Level Performance sponsored #1w.
In the Coors Light Dirt Truck feature, Fostoria's Bob Dible held off Steve
Sabo's challenges the last 10 laps of the 20-lap feature to claim his second
career Fremont victory.
"I wasn't getting off that bottom for nothin'...if I was going to get beat
they were going to have to drive around me," said Dible beside his Bob's Machine
sponsored #17. "It was a lot of fun racing with Steve Sabo...he raced me very
clean which shows how talented he is."
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, May 13 for Brubaker Auction
Night featuring the Fort Ball Pizza 410 sprints, Fremont Federal Credit Union
305 sprints and the Coors Light Dirt Trucks. For more information on "The Track
That Action Built" schedule, log onto www.fremontohspeedway.com
