FREMONT, Ohio - Greg Wilson is
accustomed to winning. But rain-outs and bad
luck have kept the two-time O'Reilly All
Star champion out of the winner's
circle so far in 2008. It took some good
luck and a trip back to Fremont
Speedway to change all of that Saturday,
May 17.
The Benton Ridge, Ohio driver led all
30 laps to claim his first win of the
season on Roots Poultry Night at "The
Track That Action Built."
"I almost forgot how to get here,"
said Wilson in the Engine Pro Victory
Lane. "The track was different
tonight...a little tight. If the guys
(promoters Andy James and Rich Farmer)
just back off a little this will be
an awesome surface."
"Boy did we need this. The guys have
been working so hard in the shop to
turn this thing around. I'm so happy for
them and for Veryl and Sabrina
Warnimont (car owners). This is a big
confidence boosters heading into next
weekend," said Wilson aboard his All Star
Plumbing, Heating and Air
Conditioning backed sprinter. "Lance
(Dewease) and all the All Stars have
been hard to beat all year. When they
come here next Saturday, they will
have their hands full...this is a tough
place and the competition is so
strong here."
Fremont's Bryan "Flipper" Sebetto
fought off challenges by Stuart Brubaker
to claim his 10th career Fremont victory
in the Fremont Federal Credit Union
305 Sprints.
"This is the first time I've won in
the family car. My dad and I put this
deal together and this is very special,"
said Sebetto beside his Schiets
Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki; Legendz Sports
Bar, American Auto Sales backed
sprinter. "Scott Gressman built us a heck
of a motor and you needed all of
it tonight."
"I love this type of track...when it
gets cowboy up," added Sebetto from the
Engine Pro Victory Lane.
Steve Sabo battled Art Ball side by
side the first eight laps of the Fremont
Fence Dirt Truck's feature, then held off
challenges by Jim McGrath to claim
his 26th career Fremont win.
"It was a matter of being patient
around traffic. Art raced me clean and
that's all you can ask," said Sabo beside
his Progressive Iron & Metal, Sabo
Race Cars and Trucks backed truck."I want
to thank my wife (Linda) and my
daughter and Dave Gibbs and everyone who
helps on this truck."
At the drop of the green for the
30-lap Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprint
feature, Wilson put the hamer down and
built up a lead as rookie Mike
Dussel, Brian Smith, Jody Keegan and Chad
Blonde raced hard in tow.
Following a pair of yellows early on,
Wilson once again built up a big lead
on the fast and tight track, with the
battle heating up for second between
Dussell and Chad Blonde.
Disaster struck on lap 14, as Blonde
flipped hard in turn 4 ending his great
run. He was okay, but done for the night.
Wilson now had a pair of lapped
machines between himself and Dussel on the
restart. Byron Reed would use this to his
advantage, getting around Dussel.
At the halfway mark it was Wilson, Reed,
Dussel, David Harrison and Smith.
The final stoppage of the feature
would come on lap 18 when Dean Jacobs got
upside down in turn 3. He was fine, but
his charge to the front was over.
As the laps ticked away, Reed would
close in on Wilson, but ran out of laps,
settling for second. Dussell continued
his impressive early season success,
finishing third, with Harrison and
Brandon Martin rounding out the top five.
In the 25-lap 305 sprint feature,
Sebetto used the high line to take the
early lead, with Brubaker followin his
tire tracks. As that duo pulled away,
Chad Wilson, rookie Jimmy Colvin and Coty
Runion fought hard for third.
Sebetto hit lapped traffic by the 10th
circuit, with the only yellow flying
a lap later. Sebetto and Brubaker
continued to be the class of the field,
building up a straight-away advantage
over the rest of the field. Colvin
would get around Wilson a lap later to
move into third, bringing along
Runion.
Sebetto would hit lapped traffic again
on the 17th lap, with Brubaker,
Colvin, Runion and Dustin Dinan in tow.
Sebetto could not shake Brubaker,
but would take the checkered flag by a
car length. Brubaker, Colvin, Dinan
and Runion would round out the top five.
In the 20-lap dirt truck main, the
front row starters Ball and Sabo would
literally race door to door the first
eight laps. Disaster struck for Ball
as he made contact with a lapped truck.
While he led at the yellow, his left
rear tire would go flat, ending his run.
Sabo couldn't breath easy though, as
opening night winner Jim McGrath raced
under him for several laps, but ran out
of steam at the end. Sabo would take
the checkered over McGrath, a fast
closing Chester Fitch, Cory Ward and Bob
Dible.
Fremont Speedway will be back in
action Saturday, May 24, as the O'Reilly
All Star Circuit of Champions bring their
touring group to town for the
first of three appearances in 2008, for a
$5,000 to win payday. The 305
sprints and dirt trucks will also be in
action.
