FREMONT, Ohio - David Harrison had to
not only defeat 51 O'Reilly All Star
Circuit of Champion Sprint drivers, but
Mother Nature as well at Fremont
Speedway Thursday night. The Burgoon,
Ohio driver led all 40 laps under
threatening skies to score his first All
Star win during the third leg of
the University of Northwest Ohio Sprint
Speedweek on Budweiser Night.
The night began with over a two hour
rain delay. Fremont Speedway and All
Star officials pushed the show along as
thunderstorms continued to
threaten the area, even making
adjustments to the order of events to ensure
the big crowd got their money's worth.
Harrison, the night's second quick
qualifier, started to the outside of the
front row and jumped into the lead at the
drop of the green. He benefitted
from yellow flags when he was mired in
heavy lapped traffic, and picked his
way through the backmarkers with
precision skill to hold off Randy Hannagan
for second win of the season at "The
Track That Action Built."
"Bill, Jamie and the crew had the car
perfect. I could drive it around he
entire track and pick my spots in
traffic," said Harrison beside his Crown
Battery, MCS Trucking, Genzman Racing,
Blaster Racing #10.
"I want to dedicate this win to my
father-in-law, Alex Burkett who we lost
a couple of weeks ago. To get my first
All Star win in front of my home
crowd and during Speedweek...it just
doesn't get any better than this,"
continued Harrison from the Engine Pro
Victory Lane.
The early rains created a fast track,
and Harrison was in lapped traffic by
the sixth circuit with Dean Jacobs,
Hannagan, Byron Reed and Danny Smith in
tow. Jacobs spun on lap 7, but kept
motoring, losing only two position. The
action came to a halt on lap 7 for a Phil
Gressman flip. Harrison had two
lapped machines between himself and
Hannagan with Reed, Jacobs and Smith
following.
When the green flew again, Harrison
continued his blistering pace, hitting
traffic again by the 17th lap. The yellow
would fly on lap 19 for a spinning
Blake Feese with Harrison only having one
lapped car between himself and
Hannagan, who had to win for a chance at
claiming the $50,000 bonus for any
driver winning four of the Speedweek
shows.
Harrison would again get a tremendous
restart while Hannagan was having fits
with traffic. Reed, Jacobs, Brock Mayes
and Lee Jacobs were having a great
battle for the third position. Harrison
would find the backmarkers again by
lap 25 as Hannagan began to close. But
once around the lapped cars, Harrison
would pull away, leaving Hannagan to
again struggle in traffic.
At the checkered flag, Harrison scored
his eighth career victory at Fremont
by four car lengths over Hannagan, Reed,
Mayes and Dean Jacobs.
"We have turned our whole season
around during Speedweek," said Hannagan
beside his Pocket Shot, Gaerte Engines,
Stage 8 Fasteners backed #1x. "We
just struggled in lapped traffic for some
reason tonight. But hey, we have a
shot at the Speedweek championship (he
has a win, a pair of second place
runs for the week) and we are as
consistent as we've been in quite some
time."
Reed said the fast surface and
continuous side-by-side racing for 40 laps
took its toll on him.
"I got tired at the end and was
missing my marks....we had a second place
car and I just let is slip away. This has
been a tiring three days of travel
and racing," said Reed beside his Reebar
Diecasting backed #5.
Because of the rain delay and the
lateness of the evening, the A-main for
the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305
Sprints was postponed until July 5 when
it will be made up along with the regular
program.
Fremont Speedway will host "A Salute
to our Military Men & Women: America's
Heroes" on Saturday, July 5. The Fortball
Pizza Palace 410 Sprints will vie
for $3,500 for the 40-lap feature with
the 305 sprints competing for $1,000
to win in addition to their make-up
feature. The Fremont Fence Dirt Trucks
will battle for $500 to win.
Prior to the night's racing, all
branches of the military will have
displays, games and fun at the
fairgrounds beginning at noon with live
entertainment, food and fun. The night
will include fireworks and salutes to
the brave men and women of the military.
