FREMONT, Ohio - The full moon was last week, but it
looked like it appeared
again Saturday, Aug. 1 at Fremont Speedway, as there were several nasty
crashes. But when the dust settled, Bucyrus, Ohio's Brock Mayes picked up
his third 410 sprint victory of the season on Kistler Engines Night.
Scoring his second victory of 2009 at Fremont was
Bradner, Ohio's Nate
Dussel in the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints, while Cory Ward
grabbed the lead coming out of turn four for the checkered when Dan Hennig
lost power, to score his fourth win of the year in the Fremont Fence Dirt
Trucks.
Mayes, who took the point lead at "The Track That
Action Built," used the
fast high side to overtake David Harrison on lap 16 and then flexed his
muscles to pull away to the victory aboard his J&F Construction, Mansfield
Cement, Kinn Brothers Heating and Cooling, Mortiz Concrete backed #11B.
"I was gurgling the last five laps," said Mayes
about running low on fuel
due to the numerous cautions in the feature. "The center of the corner was a
handful because I had no power steering. I was just praying it would stay
green. I saw at the end Byron (Reed) must have been up to second (from his
18th starting spot)...I talked to him earlier tonight and told him all he
needed was one good run and he got it so he'll be something to deal with the
rest of the year."
"I was debating where to go. I was waiting for the
top to get cleaned off
somewhat...thought a few of the guys in the back would run up there, but it
didn't look like too many guys were. It got beat up a little bit so I pulled
the wing back and was getting after it," added Mayes of his eighth career
Fremont victory on night #18 of the Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica
Sprint Title Championship Series.
"I have to thank all the guys, Daniel and Keith and
Davey and my fiancée
Alisha and my dad...if it wasn't for dad none of us would be out here. We've
been a little frustrated the last month...we had a good speedweek...but
we're going to put the old car back together...the one that we crashed and
see what it could do. That was if we didn't win tonight, but now who knows.
We do like the other car a little better. We have to get over the hump a
little," concluded Mayes.
Dussel took the lead from Jimmy Colvin on the
second lap and held off
several charges from Brad Haudenschild to nab his third victory in 2009 (he
also has a win at Attica Raceway Park) aboard his Berrier Fabrication, OC
Shocks, Dussel Welding backed #1.
"The winnings might have to go toward putting the
motor back together
because this thing ran 250 (degrees) the whole race. I was pretty close to
pulling off a few times," said Dussel in the Engine Pro Victory Lane. "But,
the win is more important I guess."
"The difference this year (his second driving) is I
have Craig and Mike
working on this thing and they have me fast every night," added Dussel.
Dan Hennig looked certain to grab his third win of
the season in the Fremont
Fence Dirt Trucks, but a big puff of smoke came out from under the hood with
four laps to go, and coming down to the checkered, his mount lost power.
Sandusky, Ohio's Cory Ward was there to capitalize, as he scored his 17th
career Fremont victory, to move him into a tie with his dad, Jim, for 28th
on the track's all-time win list.
"I don't know what happened to Dan, but I'll take
it," said Ward beside his
Excuses Lounge, Budweiser, East Side Cafe, Precision Auto Body backed truck.
"All I know is I tied my dad with this win."
In the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprints 30-lap
feature, David Harrison
grabbed the lead with Mayes and Brian Lay in tow. A caution after one was
complete for FAST point leader Craig Mintz - there would be five cautions
and two reds in the first 12 laps - would see the running order Harrison,
Mayes, Brian Smith, Lay, Caleb Griffith, Mark Keegan, Mike Linder and
Kevin
Lee. Just as Mayes would putting pressure
on Harrison for the lead, the
caution would fly on lap four. On the restart, Travis Philo got upside down
and into Mintz, ending both of their nights.
Once the green came back out, Harrison and Mayes
continued their battle up
front, while Griffith moved into third with Smith and Lay rounding out the
top five. A caution on lap 10 was followed by a red the next circuit when
Jody Keegan took a nasty tumble into turn one - he was uninjured. A lap
later and Smith's run would come to an end as he spun in turn two.
The race would go caution-free the remaining 18
laps.
Harrison looked comfortable on the high side and
actually pulled away from
Mayes slightly, but Mayes regrouped and got a run on Harrison at the halfway
mark and drove around him in turn four to grab the lead a lap later. All
eyes were on defending track champion Byron Reed who had methodically worked
his way up to sixth at the halfway mark.
Mayes set a torrid pace and was into lapped traffic
on lap 19 while Harrison
rode in second and Griffith in third, while Reed moved into fourth. With
eight laps remaining, Griffith watched his chances slip away when his front
wing collapsed, allowing Reed to move into third. As Mayes picked his way
through traffic, Reed closed in on Harrison for the runner-up spot and after
three laps of side-by-side racing, took it on lap 28. But, it was too
little, too late, as Mayes took the checkered. Reed, Harrison, Lee Jacobs -
from the tail - and Mark Keegan would round out the top five.
Following a yellow on the initial start of the 305
sprint feature, disaster
struck on the ensuing restart, as Dustin Dinan took a nasty looking flip
down the front stretch, destroying his car. Dinan was taken to the hospital
with injuries to his leg, but otherwise was alert and conscience.
Jimmy Colvin grabbed the lead on the third try with
Dussel, Chad Wilson,
Brad Haudenschild, Zack Kramer, Bill Kraylek, Bobby Clark and John Ivy in
tow. Dussel would simply drive around Colvin a lap later, with Haudenschild
following in his tire tracks two laps later to grab second. The caution
would fly on lap five with the running order Dussel, Haudenschild, Colvin,
Wilson and Kramer.
On the restart, Dussel and Haudenschild would run
nose-to-tail while Wilson
and Kramer got around Colvin who began to fade with mechanical woes.
Haudenschild began really applying the pressure to Dussel on lap 9. As the
pair hit lapped traffic on lap 12, Haudenschild was beside Dussel. In fact,
as they raced to the start-finish line to complete the 13th circuit, the two
were side-by-side, just as the caution flew.
With a clear track ahead, Dussel would maintain his
lead, while Haudenschild
looked to make his move. Meanwhile the race for third was close between
Wilson, Kramer, Todd Heuerman and Bobby Clark. The battle up front would
slow on lap 16 for a debris caution as Kramer's front wing lost a panel,
sending him to the tail.
Haudenschild's exciting run would come to an end on
lap 18, as he was
attempting to drive to Dussel's outside exiting turn two, he would spin.
Dussel when then pull away, but the battle for second was exciting between
Wilson, Heuerman and Clark. Heuerman would take the runner-up spot on lap
22, while Clark would grab third at the white flag. When the checkered flew
it was Dussel over Heuerman, Clark, Wilson and Ivy.
Art Howey Jr. used his outside front starting spot
to grab the early lead of
the dirt truck feature, with Paul Brown Jr., Jimmy McGrath Jr. and Steve
Endicott in tow. Endicott would take second a lap later, with McGrath Jr.
stealing it away on lap three. McGrath would drive around Howey on lap five,
with the caution flying soon after for his dad. The truck on the move was
eighth-place starter Hennig, who moved into third on lap five as McGrath Jr.
took the lead.
On the restart, Hennig would move into second and
right away began
pressuring McGrath, as the two raced side-by-side the next two laps before
Hennig used his horsepower for the lead on lap eight. Hennig began to pull
away with McGrath battling Howey, Endicott and Cory Ward for second. Hennig
would hit lapped machines by lap 13 with McGrath, Wad and Endicott trying to
stay close. With four laps to go, a big puff of smoke came out from under
the hood of Hennig's truck, just as the caution would fly for McGrath Jr.
With four laps remaining, the running order was now
Hennig, Ward, Endicott,
Howey and Will Tezak. It didn't appear anything was seriously wrong with
Hennig's truck, as he pulled away on the restart while Ward had his hands
full with Endicott for second. Hennig took the white and powered down the
backstretch headed toward what appeared would be his third victory of the
year. However, as he came out of turn four with the checkered waiving, his
truck lost power and Ward drove by for the victory. Hennig would coast
across for second with Endicott, Tezak and Howey rounding out the top five.
