FREMONT, Ohio - Tim Shaffer looked like a surgeon
as he sliced his way
through the field at Fremont Speedway Saturday night to claim the $10,000
prize for the 2nd Annual Jim Ford Classic on Ludwig Propane Night.
Shaffer, of Aliquippa, Pa., led 48 of the 50 laps
and executed a daring move
on lap 37 to pass two lapped machines and race leader Stevie Smith in turns
three and four to regain the top spot. He then had to hold off Smith, who
was on a mission as he won Friday night's feature and was looking for not
only the $10,000 top prize, but a $6,000 bonus for winning both nights for a
possible $20,000 weekend.
"I had my eyes closed when I made that move in
three and four," joked
Shaffer, the 2009 champion of the O'Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions of
his eighth All Star victory of the season. "It was one of those deals where
you tried not to seal your tires up and I got a little bit too easy on it."
It was Shaffer's fourth victory of the season at
Fremont Speedway, two of
them have netted him $10,000 each as he also won the Ohio Sprint Speedweek
finale in June.
"The whole year has been great. Brian (Kemenah,
crew chief) and guys have
done a great job. I have great owners in Aaron Call and Janet Holbrook. The
Kistler power, the Hoosier tires and J&J chassis, the VRP Shocks...the list
goes on. Everybody had done their part and we're up front... it's awesome,"
said Shaffer in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.
On Friday night, Shaffer struggled and he took the
blame. "I talked the crew
chief into trying something and it didn't work too good. At least we know
we're not to do that any more. I have good ideas every once and awhile...but
sometimes they aren't so good either," added Shaffer beside his Kistler
Racing Products, Kistler Engines, J&J Chassis backed #83..
For Smith, he was so close to taking a lot of money
back home to Broken
Arrow, Oklahoma.
"Tim did a good job. He settled down and moved down
for the lapped
traffic...he didn't have anything to lose because I'd already taken the top
from him. It cost us a lot tonight not to win this race. I've been doing
this many years and this is where we got...we got second and we'll be happy
with it and go home," said Smith beside his Zemco Speed Shop, Zemco Headers
backed #1.
Greg Wilson has run well this year, but hasn't
found victory lane with the
All Stars. His third place finish Saturday was a real confidence booster.
"We passed good race cars tonight. It seems like
we've been right up in the
top five a lot of times but we can't seem to get up there and get us a win,"
said Wilson beside his DNC Hydraulics, All Star Heating and Cooling backed
W20. "Timmy's been the best car all year on this All Star deal. Stevie
Smith, when ever they've come out they've obviously been the car to beat
too. We're happy to run third tonight. The boys had the race track awesome
tonight. This makes the driver's come out It was nice to give Veryl and
Sabrina (Warnimont, car owners) a good run tonight."
Fremont's Bobby Clark held off a hard-charging
Stuart Brubaker to claim his
third win of the season at Fremont in the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305
Sprints. It was his 23rd career Fremont victory to move him into a tie for
18th on the track's all-time win list. Clark averted disaster with five laps
to go as he almost drove of the high side of turn two.
"If I took it easy through there I was alright but
I knew Stuart was back
there and I didn't know how hard he was going to be pressing me so I drove
it in there pretty deep once and got over the lip," said Clark in the Engine
Pro Victory Lane beside his Al David Carpeting, Jenny's Copper Penny, B&L
Plumbing backed #40.
"This has been one of the funnest year's I've ever
had. That's the reason
we're doing this...we're just out to have fun. The car is good...we've had
some bad luck this year, but all in all we've been doing pretty good," added
Clark.
"Now that you've got that hall of fame thing going
on...that was really a
neat deal when I went to it (the induction ceremony in June). The more wins
I get it just makes it so special," added Clark, who won on what would have
been the late Harold McGilton's 75th birthday, a close friend of his. "He's
always on our mind...he was riding with us tonight."
Shaffer - who earlier in the evening got an extra
$1,000 for setting quick
time - showed early he had the car to beat as he bolted into the lead of the
50-lap feature with Brock Mayes, Randy Hannagan, Bill Rose and Stevie Smith
in tow. As Shaffer pulled away, Mayes had his hands full with Hannagan until
the first caution would fly on lap six for Cole Duncan. It was a benefit for
Shaffer who was just getting into lapped traffic.
When the green flew again, Shaffer pulled away
while Mayes, Hannagan and
Smith waged a torrid battle for second. Again, just as Shaffer hit the back
markers the caution would fly on lap 13 for Bryan Sebetto who stopped on the
traffic. With a clear track Shaffer pulled away again when the green flew,
with Mayes now feeling the pressure from Smith for second.
Shaffer would hit lapped traffic on lap 20 with
Mayes still holding off
Smith while Hannagan and Greg Wilson battled for fourth. Smith would steal
second from Mayes on lap 22 and began closing on Shaffer in traffic. Action
would come to a halt on lap 27 when Caleb Helms took a nasty flip in turn
two - he walked away from the crash. Shaffer and Smith now had a few lapped
machines between themselves and Wilson who had taken third on lap 26.
Again with a clean track Shaffer was able to pull
away from Smith while
Wilson continued to run third and 11th starter Phil Gressman moving into
fourth with Mayes and Hannagan in tow. Shaffer would catch the rear of the
field on lap 33, allowing Smith to close.
Smith would drive under Shaffer to grab the lead on
lap 35, but Shaffer
wouldn't give up as the two diced their way through traffic. Smith would
lead lap 36, but Shaffer would pull off a daring bonsai move in turns three
and four a lap later to dart between two lapped machines and Smith for the
lead.
Shaffer picked his way through traffic while Smith
stayed in striking
distance, but just couldn't get enough of a run to pass him. Shaffer would
fly to the checkered with Smith, Wilson, Gressman and Mayes rounding out the
top five.
Daryn Pittman earned an extra $500 for passing the
most cars over the
weekend in the feature events.
Clark and Jake Trevino would race side-by-side for
the lead at the start of
the 305 feature while Nate Dussel, D.J. Foos, John Ivy and Brubaker in tow.
Clark would pull away slightly while Trevino, Dussel, Brubaker and Ivy waged
a great fight for second. The first caution would fly on lap nine with
Dussel and Brubaker got together on the front stretch, ending Dussel's run
with heavy front end damage.
On the restart, Trevino again pressured Clark for
the top spot with Brubaker
making a three car battle. Following a quick caution for Craig Kays on lap
10, Clark, Trevino and Brubaker picked right back up on the battle up front.
Clark was able to begin pulling away slightly while Brubaker got around
Trevino on lap 13 for second. Ivy would move into third on lap 17 as Clark
caught the rear of the field on lap 19.
Clark avoided disaster on lap 20 when he nearly
jumped the cushion in turn
two, allowing Brubaker to close with Ivy, Foos and Trevino in tow. A yellow
would give Clark a clear track on lap 21, but he still had his hands full
with Brubaker when the green came back out. Another yellow for Mat Merrill
on lap 22 gave Brubaker one last shot at Clark in a three-lap dash to the
finish.
Clark hit his marks in the corners perfectly and
would take the checkered
with Brubaker, Ivy, Foos and Trevino rounding out the top five. After taking
the checkered Foos would dump his mount in turn one, but he was okay.
Fremont Speedway will wrap up the 2009 season
Saturday, Sept. 26 with the
Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprints, Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints
and the Fremont Fence Dirt Trucks in action. It will also be the ladies
Powder Puff truck race.
