Shaffer extends All Star point lead with Ohio Speedweek win at Sharon

HARTFORD, Ohio -(6-24-10)- By Brian Liskai After winning night #2 of the O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Sprint Speedweek last Saturday, Tim Shaffer hasn’t had the best of luck or results all week. That changed Thursday at Sharon Speedway, the 7th of nine stops during Speedweek. The Aliquippa, Pa. driver and defending All Star champion took the lead on lap 12 from his ninth starting spot, and went on to claim his third All Star victory of 2010.

More importantly, Shaffer’s 22nd career All Star victory gave him the lead in the Ohio Sprint Speedweek championship points and extended his lead over two-time All Star champion Greg Wilson by 407 points for a second consecutive overall All Star championship and that $50,000 prize at the end of the season.

“I just tried to be careful, it seemed like I was ripping the tires off that thing. I just tried to keep the tires under me and look for the checkered,” Shaffer said beside his Kistler Racing Products, Kistler Engines backed CH Motorsports owned entry.

Shaffer joined four-time Ohio Sprint Speedweek champion Dale Blaney as the only repeat winners so far during the 28th annual trek across the Buckeye State.

When the green flag dropped in the 30-lap, 24-car O'Reilly Auto Parts All Star Sprint A-Main Tyler Walker (Los Angeles) went to the lead, but Sharon Speedway veteran Scott Bonnell (Fairview, Pa.) didn't fall far behind. Brandon Wimmer (Fairmount, Ind.) held onto the third position until lap eight, when Shaffer made a move to the inside of turn one.

The yellow came out on lap 12, setting up a single file restart and Shaffer tried to make a move on the outside of Walker for first, forcing them to run side-by-side until Shaffer gained momentum out of turn two to take the lead.

On lap 18, Wimmer drove under Walker for second in turn two with Blaney trying to hold off Brad Sweet (Grass Valley, Calif.) for fourth. Shaffer was setting the pace and avoiding lap traffic with five circuits to go and was able to hold onto that lead to take the checkered. Wimmer scored his second podium finish of the week with a great second place run in Rick Ferkel’s #0 with Walker taking yet another third place performance in the Keen Motorsports entry. Blaney would bring George Fisher’s #2 home in fourth with Wednesday night’s winner Sweet rounding out the top five in his Kasey Kahne owned machine. The drive of the night went to Apollo, Pennsylvania’s Ed Lynch Jr. who raced from his 20th place starting spot to sixth at the finish.
